As I write this blog post, there are countless marketers working to increase the amount of Google traffic going to their website through methods including link building, article writing, long tail keywords, and much more. For many, the quest to understand all the aspects of Google and SEO, which stands for search engine optimization, is often frustrating, time consuming, and often the results are less than hoped for.
While many people seem to practically to default to all things Google as a source for website traffic, there is another option and that is iTunes. It is substantially easier to get iTunes traffic than Google traffic.
iTunes has over 100 million active users and these users have credit cards. This is clearly a marketplace with a lot of buyers. Keep this in mind because if you’re going to begin podcasting you undoubtedly have an advantage over those who have no understanding of SEO and Google. For anyone interested in getting traffic to a website, this is something that should not be dismissed.
Please note that iTunes has its own search engine. Podcasts are rated based on various elements. Each podcast has keywords, a title, a description, and receives “votes.” Listeners are able to use a “rate and review” feature to let iTunes know how well they like your podcast. Higher ratings means your podcast will rank better. This is along the lines of SEO as incoming links show the popularity of your website or blog. As the number of links increases, the better your website will rank.
I won’t attempt to explain the iTunes algorithm as I have no idea how it works. Instead, I highly recommend that you learn what successful podcasters are doing and implement these methods as you begin, and continue through, your podcasting journey.
There are many methods to let people know you are involved in podcasting, including adding links to various social media websites. There is also a way to add a Podcast plug-in to a WordPress blog. If you’re a white hat marketer, especially if you’ve not achieved success with the world of Google and SEO, getting involved in podcasting may certainly be worthwhile. As always, do your homework and realize there are many credible sources to help you with this process.
