Marketing Resources

For as long as I am able to remember, I have been aware of the term “social graces.” For those of you who may not be familiar with this, social graces are basically the skills used to interact politely in social situations. Social graces, which result from having poise and confidence, include good manners and proper behaviour. It is important to remember that social graces should apply not only when meeting others in person, but also within all aspects of social media. All too often, some people forget that social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, is not actually designed to sell anything. Instead, it is there to help you build relationships. This is obviously important if you are trying to gain trust and make others aware of your expertise in a particular field. There are steps to help you with this process.

First, give away content. Examples of this include free reports, videos (such as video replies or a short “helpful update” video), or notes posted on Facebook. Make sure the content is valuable and worth sharing with your readers. I like e-mail lists, but keep in mind these same tactics apply to the social media websites too. Be sure to package this up professionally and present it, without any strings attached, to your prospects.

Second, be sure to answer questions. The question and answers sections of the various social networks is something you need to become familiar with and involved in. This is a great way to show your expertise. Facebook and LinkedIn have such features, as do many online marketing forums. While Twitter does not, just search for questions and then reply back with an answer within the 140 Tweet limit. Taking the time to answer questions in a professional manner also helps you build a following as well.

Lastly, people need to find your answers first. You may be an expert within your field, but this means nothing if people are not aware of this. This is why going viral is such an important concept. Get yourself to the front of the pack by integrating you social media profiles into your blog. Also, get involved with various networking events. Don’t overlook placing links in your e-mail signature. Be sure your content is easy to distribute, and is something that people will want to share with others.

Remember, social media is for building relationships and helping you show your expertise. When applied fittingly , this will lead you to new sales and more business opportunities. Be sure to use your social graces and, in time, it will not come across like a selling effort when you provide links to your website. Social media is an amazing phenomenon. Used properly, it will likely provide wonderful results for you personally and professionally.
