Many people who have spent time on the internet have likely come across the RSS symbol. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” You may be wondering what the purpose of RSS is. Basically, it is a technology which allows people to keep track of their favourite websites. RSS is used by millions of people worldwide.

Subscribing to the RSS feed of a website provides you with a method of getting up to date information sent directly to you. This is beneficial because you will be receiving relevant information, which you are interested in, and you will be able to read it on your time schedule.

RSS is often throught of as a “news feed.” My blog has an RSS feed. I always appreciate it when people subscribe to my blog and read it. Please don’t worry that I used the term “subscribe.” There is no cost for RSS feeds and it is easy to unsubscribe, if you want to.

Once you begin suscribing to RSS feeds, be sure to get an RSS feed reader. The one I use is Google Reader, which is free, and is web based technology. Other options include Bloglines, MyYahoo, MyGoogle and MyMSN. In a way, feed readers remind me of e-mail. When you subscribe to feeds, the unread entries from the websites you’re tracking will be highlighted in bold. Click on these entries and you will be able to read the lastest updates using the feed reader. It is a simple process. In addition, Bloglines and Google Reader, along with the other free RSS feed reader services, also provide help sections for those who may have further questions.

For those of you who do not want to use an RSS reader, that is fine. In many cases, you may subscribe to RSS feeds through a more familiar method and that is e-mail. Sometimes, people are more comfortable with this option.

In addition to RSS, you may have also noticed buttons for ATOM and XML, among others. Anytime you come across these buttons, it simply means the website you are viewing has a feed you may subscribe to.

When it comes to keeping track of websites, RSS is easier to use than the older method of bookmarking a website. With bookmarks, it means that you miss information if you forget to check them. Plus, if a website is not updated you will get the same information numerous times. In addition, you end up doing all the work to track websites, which gets complicated if you track more than one.

RSS is certainly a helpful method to keep track of your favourite websites.
