Most marketers agree…copywriting is not fun. The process takes a lot of time and even then, it often does not work properly. I have spent a lot of time studying, comparing, and then restudying various methods in a quest to learn how to become an effective copywriter. It is not an easy task. It’s worth learning though. For anyone who would do just about anything than write a sales page, here are some hints for you:
1. Study Your Competitors – Don’t waste your time studying just any copywriter. Study those who are already successful in your chosen niche. Compare your style to theirs. What types of pages do they use? What keywords? Your site will continue to improve because of your efforts to learn what others have done to achieve copywriting success.
2. Write An Effective Headline – When it comes to copywriting, headlines are often considered the most important aspect. Remember, most people like to skim text. While an article you’ve written will be important to you, your readers will be even less discerning. They will be looking for key points that highlight the entire content. Rewrite and test your headlines to see what works best. For some readers, everything after the headline is simply filler copy and is largely ignored.
3. Highlight Benefits – Help the readers realize what benefits they will gain by following your advice. Don’t focus immediately on the features of what you’re selling. Most people do not care about what you are selling and/or promoting. At least not at first. You need to help them with this aspect. Layout exactly what benefits they will gain from those features you’ve been bragging about.
4. Relate To Your Readers: Be Personable–A good sales letter is along the lines of a casual conversation. Don’t try and come off as the host of a late night infomercial. Think about presenting this to a friend or loved one, would your sales copy convince someone close to you to buy your product or considering doing any type of business with you?
5. Get Valid Testimonials– People often make decisions because of what other people do. Get valid testimonials from customers or use success stories from your niche. Often times, people make a purchase, for example, because a neighbour or loved one has already purchased the item, or made an investment backing a product. Get testimonials from your customers or success stories in your niche. It’s against the law to make up a testimonial, so make sure the testimonials are valid.
A sales page needs to show your enthusiasm for all that you do. You need to make your readers understand, and embrace, what is important to you…so it becomes a passion for them as well. These pieces will all come together, and make more sense, as you work your way through this process.
